Cover Story

Seeing the different side of Park Shin Hye & Kim Rae Won.
One from cheerful to rebellious.
One lived from dark to bright.
Park Shin Hye & Kim Rae Won back on-screen with a new drama, breaking their limits, raising expectations high.

Parted 2 years, they have chosen to return on-screen with their new drama “Doctors”.

Reason? The attractiveness of the characters.

Kim Rae Won got rid of his strictness, dark life, transformed into a lively & humorous professor of neurosurgery, he hopes to give audience the fresh new side of him.

Park Shin Hye’s acting skills has improved, no longer as a lovely & cheerful character, but chosen to act as a teen who experienced bullied childhood and through self-preservation has kept her heart shut away from other people. She has since transformed into a successful neurosurgeon. This challenging role has made everyone looked forward to.

This issue of uweekly magazine focused on Seoul, South Korea, SBS TV Station Building, the “Doctors” press conference. In its 5 minutes of drama trailer, it has indeed appalled its audience. Kim Rae Won and Park Shin Hye’s love spark, the path of being in love, increases audience curiosity.

“Doctors” premiered on 20 June 2016, Monday, on SBS Channel. In its 1st episode, it scored a nationwide rating of 12.9%, a remarkable and leading drama hit! The KBS drama, “Beautiful Mind” that uses medical background as story plot, premiered on the same date, ratings scored a disappointing of 4.1%. This has proven that this charming couple group of Park Shin Hye and Kim Rae Won is unbeatable!

“Doctors” is a drama series on medical, love story. This drama is written by Ha Myung-hee, who had also written for “High Society” and “One Warm Word”, directed by Oh Choong-hwan. This drama about the realism in the relationship between doctors and patients and the social prejudice of educational background and origin.

Yoo Hye Jung (Park Shin Hye) was a tough bully in school with a prickly personality and always goes wayward. She had many scars from her childhood and through self-preservation, Hye Jung keeps her heart shut away from other people. However, she changes after meeting her mentor Hong Ji Hong (Kim Rae Won) who plays a key role in transforming her life from a helpless gangster to a compassionate doctor. The couple then opens up the love relationship between them.

Director Oh Choong-hwan revealed, this is a drama filled with human emotion, the choice of using the hospital as the background is also the reason behind – This is the place that unpredictable & different situations happen, hence different emotions are triggered within.

Director Oh also expressed that he was a little worried that Rae Won’s previous character roles are too dark, which he may not be able to express the liveliness in this role. However, he realised that his worry is unnecessary.

Director Oh also expressed compliments to Park Shin Hye’s acting skills. He explained, “She is someone who can make me feel touched every day. She is very popular and professional, even for fighting scenes she is determined not to use substitutes!”

Park Shin Hye – The Wild Character

“This drama actually touches on human most vulnerable emotions. I hope that everyone will be able to feel the emotions within when watching the drama, and be able to find the healing power.”

When the casts for “Doctors” were revealed, it indeed shocked the audience. Park Shin Hye has become slimmer, her face is sharper. If at a glance, you may not recognize her. In her interview, she also explained that she lost some baby fats, but her weight remains the same, and thanks all for the concern.

This time, we had a face-to-face interview with Park Shin Hye in Seoul, South Korea, she is petite sized, wore a black with lace westernized dress, elevated her sexiness. She welcomed the foreign media with her cheerful smile and friendly attitude.

According to the rules of interviewing Korean Celebrities, the media are allowed to ask from a list of “approved” questions, reporters will also go with the flow and try to “cross” the line. In this interview, the ambiance for Park Shin Hye is good, when the media tried to ask questions beyond those “approved” questions, Park Shin Hye said, “It’s okay, everyone please feel free to ask any questions” through the interpreter. Upon hearing these words, the entire interview felt relaxed, she was very willing to share and chat with the media. She left us good impressions.

Kim Rae Won is someone good to rely on

In “Doctors”, Park Shin Hye (As Yoo Hye Jung) acted as a teen-gangster who transformed into a neurosurgeon. This character sets many differences from her past characters that she had acted for.

She said, “I had always acted as a lively and cheerful characters in the past, and this time, ‘Yoo Hye Jung’ is someone who is afraid of getting hurt and leaving people she loves. She is pretty unreasonable yet emitting attractive wild character. This role is challenging on human nature, one who has met different kinds of people in life, one life changes. I feel that this script is very well written and I would also like to give myself a challenge to try on different drama genre. This is why I accepted this drama.”

Park Shin Hye also revealed, her previous works are with people with the same seniority, like Lee Min Ho, Kim Woo Bin and Lee Jong Suk. All of these feels like working hand-in-hand to make this a perfect ending drama series. On the other hand, working with senior Kim Rae feels like he is always behind supporting me and cheering on. “I feel at eased and relaxed in this drama because of his care and guidance.”

Are there any similarities between Park Shin Hye and ‘Yoo Hye Jung’?

“I started working since young, so it’s inevitable to be hurt. The role of ‘Yoo hye Jung’ is that she faced bad relationship between her parents, causing her to be hurt. For me, sometimes I feel hurt due to the comments by friends or netizens. Despite being hurt by different reasons, the scars left behind are the same.

This drama actually touches on human most vulnerable emotions. I hope that everyone will be able to feel the emotions within when watching the drama, and be able to find the healing power.”

Leading a happy life

In the Korea entertainment industry, Park Shin Hye can be called as a “Legend Lady”. However, she feels that this title will bring her the invisible pressure/stress.

She expressed, it is stressful enough being an actress. In life, the good and bad things contrasts, and this depends on each individual’s view and mind-set.

“When my workload increased tremendously last year, I was unhappy. It’s the same for this year. However, when I adjusted my mind-set, thinking on the positive side, I managed to control myself and enjoy the happy moments. Once I knew that I am able to handle all with a happy and positive attitude, I would also feel like emitting my positive energy to everyone.”

Park Shin Hye’s life goal: To live happily.

“Some fans told me: ‘I managed to walk out of depression after watching your drama. I wanted to die, but now, I want to live on strongly.’ At first I felt awkward, but happy. As an actress, I want to bring the right message to all my audience. My family loves to help people as well, I hope one day I can be like Audrey Hepburn, always lending a helping hand to those in need.”

Park Shin Hye frankly shared, her family had experience difficult times, but they still helped those who needs more help than them. Maybe it’s because of parental influences, sharing and helping people is a natural thing to do. She is also very grateful to her entertainment company and fans who have been supporting and helping her to complete the unaccomplished.

Editor's Note: "Doctors" is aired on every Tuesday and Wednesday, 8.10pm, on ONE Channel (Singtel TV Channel 513, 604 and Starhub TV Channel 124, 820, 823.)
